This evening was our first Outdoor Round of the Month for this shooting season and we were very pleased that Anne Jones and her family were able to attend.
Anne kindly accepted the role of Lady Paramount for the evening and was delighted to present, in memory of her husband Dave, our new Longbow Trophy, “The Dave Jones Memorial Cup” to David Bermingham who scored 79 over handicap. Well done David!
Those Members who shot with Dave know what a keen Longbow Archer he was and as a Committee Member he generously gave his time to not only improve the Club equipment but the beginners too!
We all feel the trophy a most appropriate and lasting tribute to Dave. We would like to thank Anne for coming along to the Club last night; it was appreciated, especially by those who had known Dave well.
Full results have been posted in the Round of the Month Section, but headline results are:
Recurve winner - Mark Fazakarley with +50
Compound winner - William Swingler with +1
Longbow winner - David Bermingham with +79
We're all glad to be back outside and look forward to next month...
Our annual trip to Shakespeare in the Park is looming and this year’s production will be As You Like It, held as usual in the grounds of Maple Hayes Hall, Lichfield.
For those of you who are new to this, we meet about an hour before curtain-up (although there isn’t one) to eat our picnics, drink our bottles of wine and have a chat, before the business of trying to concentrate on the play. The ‘seats’ (straw bales) are usually grabbed by one of us so we can all be together, but they’re not the driest or most comfortable of things, so bring a rug, cushion or groundsheet to sit on. No umbrellas either, so if the forecast’s poor, have a hat or hood to keep the rain off. The production is never cancelled through rain!
Tickets will be booked for Friday 23rd June, £15.00 each. You have to be seated for 7.30pm, but turn up with or without your ‘evening meal’ any time after 6.30!
To book your tickets, either sign up on the list already on the Entertainments noticeboard in the indoor range, or email Judi or Fiona as soon as possible, but no later than Friday June 9th. Our block booking is usually limited so it’s first come first served. Pay & collect your tickets, by arrangement, from Judi at the club from Monday 12th onwards, please.
A synopsis will be provided with your tickets, whether you need one or not.
As always, the more the merrier, so please come!
This month's Round of the Month is tomorrow, and we finally get to go outside! After six months of shooting a monthly Portsmouth round on the indoor range, we take to the field for the monthly Warwick round for the first time in 2017.
The Warwick round utilises 5-zone scoring on a 122cm face and consists of two dozen arrows at 60 yards, followed by another two dozen at 50 yards, shot in ends of six arrows. One end of sighters is allowed before the first distance.
For the ROM, everyone needs to record their score on the same night to ensure everyone is dealing with the same conditions. Sighters are at 7pm, and the weather is looking like this...
Results will be posted in the Round of the Month section. Good shooting!
Well, the weather just managed to stay fine for the annual Lichfield Archers Blossom shoot today. A changeable mix of (very) light rain, sunshine and occasional gusts of wind challenged the competitors throughout the day.
Over 40 archers attended today, with representatives from Leek, Trent Valley and Chase mixing in with the home side. All bow types were represented (just!) and there were senior and junior entries across all disciplines.
Main round for the day was an American, with junior equivalents available.
Results went as follows (full results available in the Competitions section):
For the compounds, there was a rare dead heat for first place between Ian Garside (TVA) and Mark Williams (TVA), with both archers scoring a respectable 796 with 83 golds. I guess they'll have to share the trophy? Third place just behind them was taken by Ben Edwards (TVA) with 794 and fourth by Duane Davies (LA) with 788.
In the Ladies Recurve, it was a clean sweep for Lichfield Archers in the top three positions, with Amanda Hodgetts' 732 a clear victor. Carolyn Hirst came second with a nice 626, and was followed closely by Christine Oxford's 618.
The Gents Recurve was a closely fought battle with 19 entries, meaning prizes for 1st to 5th position. Taking the top step with 758 was Bob Bellett (LA), just ahead of Alan Broadley (LA) with 748. Third spot was filled by John Hancock (LA) on 734 and then Quentin Edwards (TVA) with a fine 716. Fifth place fell to Kevin Haye (Leek) with his 696.
In the Juniors, prizes were picked up for the shorter rounds by:
Georgina Hodgetts (LA) - Recurve 576
Joanne Huang Hodges (LA) - Recurve 592
Elliot Thornton (TVA) - Compound 704
Chloe Arnold (Leek) - Recurve 403
Tom Garside (TVA) - Compound 727
Toby James (Leek) - Recurve 459
Final prize went to Frank Roberts (LA) for his longbow score of 235 winning him his class. Also, Frank's score was a stunning +63 over his handicap and netted him The Richard Butlin Trophy.
A great day was had by all, and as ever, thanks go to lots people for making it happen (Frank and the committee, the catering supplied by Fiona and Judi, all of the setup and breakdown crew... look there's too many, so if you've been forgotten, please forgive me). A special shout-out to Adam, our judge who made sure not a single line call went the wrong way, and a big thank you to David Hodges for stepping in as photographer for the day. See below for some examples of his great work!
